It was around this time the they both became christians and Marcos was able to turn his life around. Teresa was married to the father of her two sons for many years, but they were not happy together. Josefina currently works at a home for indigenous children as a cook. Josefina works long hours and doesn’t get paid much, but they help with Perla and provide 3 meals a day. Perla’s 14 year old sister Lizbeth lives with them and takes care of the children during the night while Perla is at work. As a single mother, it has been hard for Perla to provide for her family and with her small salary she cannot build a house. What she does earn, she uses to buy food, pay for the land, and provide the basic necessities for her children. She would like a house so that her children have something better than just a room to grow up in.

It was not long before they started having problems with Jorge’s mother and needed to find a place of their own. They began searching for a plot of land with payments they could afford and were able to find one near Blanca’s mother. Jorge works selling candy, chips, and fruit at Playa Hermosa from Monday-Saturday, all day long. During a good month, he can earn up to $315 a month, but winter months are not as profitable. Blanca dedicates herself to taking care of their daughter and house. Jorge built a small room for them on their land, it is wood covered with plastic but it looks in the rain.

Pascual’s family doesn’t speak Spanish which has made things difficult for Hermelinda as she has had to take responsibility of everything. Pascual’s sister lives with them. Pascual returned to Oaxaca for some time to help and care for his grandma leaving Hermalinda to stay in Ensenada to work and take care of their commitments here. Hermelinda lives under tarps with a dirt floor battling insects and mice, along with the weather. Hermalinda works at a different place each day, being sure to maker enough each week to cover the payments on the land. She works whatever jobs she can get, typically working 8-10 hrs a day, 4 days a week. Hermalinda came asking for help so that they can sleep and eat in comfort.
