They met in Tijuana while working for the same company and decided to start a relationship, eventually moving in together; they have lived the last 6 years in Ensenada and have 3 children. 8 years ago, Maria was working in Tijuana and she had a lady looking after her daughter Alison, when she received notice from the fire station that her daughter had been burned and she needed to return home. Alison had boiling water fall down her back, all the way from the neck down. Alison has since had 10 surgeries and been under the care of doctors in Pasadena, CA. They received special permission for the daughter to travel to the USA to receive the specialized medical care at the Children’s Medical Center of Pasadena. Due to all the medications Alison has been taking, she now has lupus in the right eye. Her condition can be life threatening if her symptoms are not treated as soon as they arise. The family does not currently live on their land because their daughter needs to be in a clean, secure house. Francisco works for a grocery store, and works a lot in order to make enough money to pay their land, their rent, and their daughters medical expenses and transportation to and from Pasadena. With all of these expenses, they have not been able to also save and build a house to live in. Maria has lived through a very difficult time with what happened to her daughter, but she also cares for her brother who is handicapped and needs to be in a wheelchair. The Homes of Hope will provide them with a fresh start and a safe place for them to call their own. (There is a picture available of the daughter’s burned back upon request).

Teresa was not treated very well by the family and her mother-in-law made her do a lot of work around the house. After years together, Teresa found out that her husband had another woman in his life and he left Teresa alone with 5 children. Teresa went back to her mom but her mom became ill with cancer and 2 passed away 2 years later. Life was very difficult and Teresa couldn’t find a way out so she left and moved to Ensenada to start over. Once they got to Ensenada, Teresa met a woman who gave her work cleaning houses. She met her current partner at a park when he bought her children all a mexican corn from a food cart, and also invited them to church. And that was the start to her new home, met Christ and found out she had purpose.

She also sells AVON, secondhand things donated to her, and she can also sew. A client of hers helped her get the land they currently live on. They got the land on credit and Araceli takes about $27 a week to save up towards the monthly payment. They live just a couple blocks from the kids school, so they don’t have to pay transportation. They do not have electricity because her street doesn’t have an electric post and she cannot afford to install one. Even like this, they have been making this home since last summer. At first they didn’t even have a bathroom and had to go to neighbors, shops, or the school to use the restroom. Araceli was able to get a hole dug to do an outhouse because her children needed an easier way, especially the younger twins. People from the community, church and family members all pitched in to build them a bathroom. Araceli has been a single mother for more than a year and all her heart desires is a to be able to give her children a proper home to grow up in and a better future. At the age of 44, it is not easy anymore for her to do this on her own. She is incredibly grateful for HOH and the team willing to come help her fulfill this dream.

Mayeli met Juan and Juan accepted Emely as his own daughter and took on the responsibility of a family when he decided to start a relationship with Mayeli. Juan is self-employed and looks for work in construction and labor, taking whatever jobs he can get. The money he makes is not enough to provide for their basic needs and to build a proper house. They have applied for a HOH so that their daughters are safe and taken care of
