Family Story:
Maria is from Oaxaca. She came to Ensenada with her family when she was 8 years old. Once she finished grade school, she dropped out and started working. Her now sister-in-law had invited her to church and that is how she met her husband, Juan Francisco. Juan is originally from Guanajuato and he was also brought to Ensenada at a young age when his family moved here. Juan and Maria dated for 3 years before moving in together and making a life together. They bought a piece of land on credit, the land they are currently living on and continue to pay off. They have a daughter named Michell who is 5 years old and in kindergarten. Michell was born premature and has had many struggles to overcome and gets sick easily. Michell has “strabismus” and will need an eye operation before she turns 10. Michell still has 5 years, but the surgery will cost them upwards of $1700 US dollars. Maria and Juan just don’t have that kind of money, nor the ability to come up with it. They take Michell to the doctor every month, and the consultation cost them about $27 each time. The doctor has warned them that the sooner she can get the surgery the better, as every month that goes by her condition is worsening. Michell uses glasses, but because of her age and eye condition, for one reason or another, she is always needing new lenses. This is also an added expense of theirs. Juan Francisco works as a day laborer and Maria is a stay at home mother who dedicates her time to Michell and the house. They need a house because the room they live in is made up of mostly tarps.
