Family Story:
Rubí is 29 years old and is from Quintana Roo, close to the border with Guatemala. She is a single mom with 3 children. Abigail is the younger with 4 years old, she is in 1st grade in kindergarten. Next is Esmeralda who is 7 years old and is in 2nd year in elementary school. The older is Rubén, who is 9 years old and is in 4th grade in elementary school. Rubí’s life has been hard. She used to live with her husband, but he was abusive and cheated on her. Two years ago, her husband kicked her out of the house and she had to leave her children with him for a couple months to find a place to live. At the beginning she was living with a friend but after saving some money she bought a property with a credit and moved there. She then went back to her husband house to recover her children. Rubí works selling tamales, she earns around $2,800 pesos per month (Around $150 Dlls.). Her husband does not give her any kind of support for her children. Anther woman and her 12 yr old son live with Rubí and together they take care of all the kids. When Rubí works her friend takes care of the kids, and when she works,Rubi take care of them. Recently her husband has sued her in order to obtain the rights on the kids saying she is no conditions to take care of them or provides them with an adequate home. Rubí dreams with having a Homes of hope house for her kids. A place where they can be safe, dry and warm. A house would also give her a lot of security to not lose custody of her children.
