Family Story:
Jessica is from Mexico City and moved to Ensenada when she was nine years old. She didn’t come from a family with money so she grew up selling nopales for a living and wasn’t able to go to high school because she had to work. When Jessica was seventeen she got married and they had two children together, Evelyn and Jose. Her first husband abandoned her shortly after Jose was born because he started doing drugs and accused her of having an unfair with his dad, but the truth was that she was being abused by her father-in-law. After a while, she got together with her second husband and father of Jesus. When Jesus was 7 months old, he was taken to the hospital because he was having convulsions and was in a coma for 15 days. He was eventually diagnosed with meningitis and was left mentally retarded as a result of what happened. Jessica has continued to work selling cactus and has been able to build a shed with some materials that were given to her.
