Family Story:
Martha is a 35 year old single mother. She sells newspaper for a living, earning around $36 dlls a week. She has 4 children- Luis (16), Alejandro (15), Jesus (13) and Carlos (10). Martha is originally from the state of Mexico and she lived most of her life there, and that is where she lived with her children’s father. In 2012, Martha’s brother who lived in Ensenada convinced her to leave her abusive husband and come to Ensenada where there were more opportunities for her to make a better life for her and her sons. Her brother helped her get settled here in Ensenada. It was very difficult in the beginning, but she worked really hard to make things work. Martha found property she wanted and had plans to occupy it until it lawfully became hers, but she found out it was owned by someone. She met with the owner and they gave Martha a great opportunity to buy the land making easy payments; it is now paid off and titled in her name. Martha expressed in one of our visits “I have been asking God for this opportunity, I dream of giving my children a better life and a safer place to live.”
