Family Story:

Epifanio and Natalia are from Oaxaca. They came to Baja quite a few years ago. They are currently living on a piece of property that Epifanio bought through a monthly payment plan of about $80 a month. Their 3 children live with them. One of the Selerino, is married and has 2 children. Selerino helps his father with the land and because of his fathers recent struggle with diabetes, he has been helping support the rest of the family so that Epifanio can focus on his health. They have a room that they built our of cardboard, wood and tarps. Their land doesn't have electricity or running water, but a neighbor 3 houses down is able to pass water to them when they need it. They have been living on their land now for 10 months. Recently, Epifanio has been unable to work due to his diabetes. He used to work for a ranch doing random labor work, but had to quit because he got very sick. For them to receive a home would be a huge blessing as they have been unable to do so for themselves.

Family Story:

Jaime and Lisbeth have a little 1-year-old girl called Kendra.  This small family has gone through some difficult times.  When they first got married and had Kendra, Jaime was the only one working and they could barely pay their rent. With time, they were able to start buying a property and there they have built a small room.  They have no running water or electricity on their property. It has been impossible for them to build a proper house on their low income and all the monthly expenses they have with a baby. It’s been especially hard on Lisbeth recently because she has had to leave her young daughter with her mother in law in so that she can go to work and help provide for her family. Jaime has been diagnosed with a cyst in his prostate and needs to have surgery.  Because of this, he has lost a lot of weight and gets sick frequently. But even with all these things going on around them, the family stands firm with the hope that they will be receiving a home.

They started renting a house but after a while the rent was too much for them to pay.  Because of this, they decided to start buying a property with a monthly payment plan. Celestino works on the field and has a really low income.  Silvia stays home with their three year old son Sebastian. They have a room made with plastic/tarps.  They’re not able to build a proper house due to their low income. Their neighbor helps them when they can and passes electricity to them and then they pay him for it.

She’s been struggling on her own since her husband died 12 years ago in a car accident. Two of her children are still in school, the oldest son graduated and is currently working and helping his mom out financially, the daughter has also finished school but she stays home and takes care of the house while Rosaria works. They were able to start paying for a piece of land and built a small house out of plastic and pieces of cardboard. Life’s been hard for them but that hasn’t been a reason for them to stop dreaming of a place where they can feel safe and live without fear.

Two of her children are still studying but the oldest son is not studying anymore as he works in order to help his mom with the expenses.

Alondra is from Mexicali and Julio from Ensenada.  They were both in school when they met.  They started dating, Alondra got pregnant, and they decided to move in together.  They moved in with Alondra’s mother for a time, but from there they started moving in and out of different places. They eventually decided to buy a property with a monthly payment plan and Alondra’s mom donated them the wood so that they could build a small room. Julio works as a security guard in a hotel from Monday through Friday and rests on Tuesdays. He gets paid about $47per week. They haven’t yet been able to build a better house because the monthly payments for the property is too much and doesn't leave with much other than taking care of their basic needs.
