It was then, just last year that they decided to make Ensenada their home and to look for an affordable lot that they could get on credit. Ensenada offers better opportunities and Jose Manuel is the only one who works; Ireni looked for ways to earn money to help her husband so that they could make the down payment. They sold any clothes they no longer needed and looked for odd jobs until they were finally able to get the land. They are currently living in the shack that Jose Manuel built them out of pallets and cardboard. Their small house is very cold, there are a lot of insects including dangerous spiders and scorpions. It is not safe for them and we are now in the winter season where it is wet and cold. They do not want their children to continue to grow up in these kinds of conditions and just want to be able to provide something better and safer for them with God’s help.

Gabriela suffered a lot of abuse from her mother; she grew up never feeling her mothers love, the love of a family, or the warmth of a home. When Gabriela was around 10 years old, she went to live with her father, but she also suffered abuse there. She was sexually abused at the age of 16 and got pregnant with her son Daniel. She returned to live with her mother, but her mother did not want her and sent her back to Mexico. Gabriela left the US when her son was just 6 months, not knowing where she was going or what she was going to do. After some time and many struggles, she met a family who basically adopted her in and made her feel loved and welcomed. Gabriela got pregnant again with her daughter Melanie from another man, and was left as a single mother of two for years. Gabriela has always desired to give her children the love, care and home that she never had growing up; she has struggled a lot to get to where she is now and to provide for her children. When her children were very young, she didn’t get to spend much time with them as she was always working. Gabriela met Luis and they started what Gabriela calls a beautiful relationship. After some time, they moved in together and decided to form a family. Finally, Gabriela was able to have that family unit she always dreamed of having. Luis is currently the only one who works so that Gabriela can spend more time with her children; something she was not able to do when she was alone. They rented for years, but after a lot of hard work they were able to pay the down payment on land and stop paying rent. Little by little they built the structure where they now live on their land. Sometimes they have not had enough money for food, but they have never lacked the desire to move forward. Their situation has been hard, but they haven’t ever given up. For this reason they have come to Homes of Hope seeking help.

They moved in with Dania’s parents, Marcos found work in construction and Dania at a factory. While Dania is at work, her mother cares for Chelsea. Dania says that they had been living on her parents land, but her father drinks a lot and when he gets drunk he would threaten to kick them out. For that reason, they decided to get their own land to build their own house on. Because of the land payments, their personal expenses and the payments for kindergarten, they have not been able to build a proper home. The room they live in has a dirt floor and a lot of insect and tarantulas have gotten in. During the rainy season everything would get wet, and then Dania’s mom gave them metal sheets to cover their roof, and that helped. Their room does not have a bathroom, nor is the kitchen separate from the bedroom. Their daughter has no privacy and still sleeps with her parents. When they heard about Homes of Hope, Dania decided to come and ask for help in order that they may receive the blessing of a well-built house that is safe and clean. Dania would like to give her daughter a good life, privacy and safety.

Gerardo and Rosa are originally from Oaxaca, they met each other there and entered a free union together. When Rosa met Gerardo, she already had her son Fredy. They came to Ensenada as a family looking for work and a better way of life. Rosa had family here who helped them get settled in a rental. After moving here, they welcomed Jerry into their family. Last year they got land on credit and continue to make monthly payments for it. The land cost about $9,000 USD, and their monthly payment is $110. They built a room with plywood and put a tarp over the roof; they have lived here since the beginning of January. Gerardo and Rosa both work for the same company packaging squash, green beans, and peas. Gerardo works at night from 6pm to 1am, Monday-Saturday and earns $12 a day. Rosa works the morning shift from 6am to 1pm so she can be off when her children are out of school, earning $9 a day. Their children go to school, Fredy goes in the morning and Jerry in the afternoon. They need a house because their salary is not enough to provide the means for them to be able to cover their personal expenses, land payment and all the materials to build the house. They do not want to pay rent anymore and that is why they got the land. Their son Jerry has always wanted a home and it would be a dream come true for him if they received one from Homes of Hope.
