Dominican Republic

S

an Pedro de Macoris, located 30 minutes drive east of the Santo Domingo airport, was founded in the late 19th century by Cubans who were fleeing their country’s War of Independence. They brought their extensive sugar cane farming knowledge and contributed to making the sugar industry the most important economic activity in this area. The city reached its peak during the first quarter of this century when sugar production enjoyed high prices on the international market as a result of the First World War.

Many Europeans settled here, creating a cosmopolitan urban center. A drop in sugar prices and destruction from Hurricane Georges in 1998 has seen the town fall into decline. Today San Pedro de Macorís is a city of approximately 200,000 inhabitants and is also known as being a source of players for US major league baseball teams.

Join with us in helping to pioneer this new YWAM location. Groups will have opportunities to provide families with new houses with our Homes of Hope program, Mission Adventures and UofN teams will be working alongside the local Churches in San Pedro. Come and also help us establish a ministry center to host teams, students and staff. The ministry is new, the vision is now and the location is the Dominican Republic!!!
